Dictionaries

Every match picks a dictionary, and every word you play is checked against it. Here is where the word lists come from, what gets filtered out, and how tiles are distributed.

  • Source: SAOL 14 faksimil + SALDO Morfologi (Språkbanken)

Danish (COR)

1. General word rules

These rules apply regardless of which dictionary you play with:

  • Words must be 2–15 letters long.
  • Every word you form on the board (including crosswords) is validated against the active dictionary.
  • Validation is case-insensitive — tiles are uppercase but the dictionary lookup normalizes to lowercase.
  • Invalid words incur a score and coin penalty.
  • The dictionary is downloaded and cached locally so word checks work instantly, even offline in bot matches.
  • You choose your dictionary when creating or joining a match. Both players in a match use the same dictionary.

2. Swedish

Swedish is built from two sources, both from Språkbanken (University of Gothenburg): the SAOL 14 faksimil (Svenska Akademiens ordlista) supplies the headwords, and SALDO Morfologi supplies the inflection paradigms. The standard list therefore includes inflected forms like springer and sprang, not just the base form springa.

Alfa Kraft is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or licensed by Svenska Akademien. The SAOL 14 headwords are taken from the SAOL 14 faksimil published by Språkbanken.

Word list details

  • 481,796 words (base forms + inflections)
  • 29 letters: A–Z plus Å, Ä, Ö
  • Inflected forms expanded from SALDO Morfologi

Filtering rules

Words are kept only if they can actually be played on an Alfa Kraft board. Anything else is dropped:

  • 2–15 letters; no spaces, digits, hyphens, or other punctuation (those characters have no tile).
  • Only letters in [a-zåäö]. Accented loanword letters are normalized to their Swedish equivalents; bound prefixes like hälso- are rejected.
  • Proper nouns and abbreviations are dropped.
  • Duplicates collapse to a single entry.

For the sources, the full build pipeline, and in-browser search, see the dedicated Swedish word list page. Prefer base forms only? See Swedish (strict).

4. Swedish (strict)

The strict Swedish dictionary (Svenska (strikt)) contains only the headwords from SAOL 14 (Svenska Akademiens ordlista): base forms like springa are kept, but inflected forms like springer and sprang are not. It is the SAOL 14 baseline of the standard Swedish list on its own — without the SALDO Morfologi inflection expansion — so every word here also appears in the standard list.

Word list details

  • 111,285 headwords (base forms)
  • 29 letters: A–Z plus Å, Ä, Ö
  • SALDO inflections excluded

The strict list uses the same tile distribution as the standard Swedish dictionary. For the source and in-browser search, see the dedicated Swedish (strict) word list page.

6. English — ENABLE1 word list

The English word list is ENABLE1, the public-domain list compiled by Mel Cooper (Mendel Leo Cooper, 1997). It is used as-is with no custom filtering pipeline.

Word list details

  • 168,551 valid words
  • 26 letters: A–Z
  • Inflected forms included directly from ENABLE1

For the source attribution, see the dedicated English word list page. You can also search the full ENABLE1 list in browser on the English word search page — English entries do not include part-of-speech or inflection metadata, so search results stay as a simple word list.

10. Norwegian — NSF

The Norwegian word list is the NSF-ordlista (version NSF25, 2025), the official competition word list of Norsk Scrabbleforbund (NSF), the Norwegian Scrabble Federation. It is used as-is, with no additions or removals.

Word list details

  • 811,821 valid forms
  • 29 letters: A–Z plus Æ, Ø, Å

The NSF-ordlista is used with permission from Norsk Scrabbleforbund (NSF), which requires that NSF be credited and the list be used as-is.
